Hot Tub Electrical Requirements

Hot Tub Electrical Wiring Requirements and Prep

Getting your electrical wiring done before hot tub delivery is not required. Some people prefer to have it all done once the hot tub is set in place.  It is recommended however that you at least have your area evaluated by an electrical contractor for the electrical service you will require.

Requirements for power are simple.

Most regular hot tubs with 2 pumps max, require a 50 amp 4 wire service (two hots, a neutral and a ground) with ground fault protector.

Hot Tubs that have 3 or more pumps  require a 60amp Service with ground fault.

Swim Spas require 60 amp 4 wire service, also with a ground fault protector.

It's very important that your electrical contractor be aware that the services REQUIRE 4 Wires!

Consult your owners manual!

All hot tub owners manuals have complete details for electrical connections.  If any thing is not clear, you will want to call the manufacturer to be sure you understand the connections.  Mis-wires are always obvious and not covered under any hot tub manufacturer warranty.

Hot tubs must be installed at least 5 feet away from metal surfaces unless each metal surface is permanently bonded by a number 6 bonding wire  to the bonding lug located on the equipment. Do not allow any electrical appliance within a 5 foot reach path from the hot tub.  This includes but is not limited to, lights, stereos, radios  tv's etc

A GFCI disconnect must be provided within sight and at least 5 feet away from the hot tub. All 120 volt outlets in the vicinity of the hot tub should additionally be protected by their own  ground fault.

All local codes must be followed and the job pass inspection before use of the hot tub.

The information here is general in nature and does not substitute or replace information found in your hot tub owners manual. All  building and electrical codes must be followed and pass inspection before use of the hot tub.
